Background of the study
Fiscal policy reforms, including changes in taxation and public expenditure, are pivotal in driving sustainable development by promoting fiscal discipline, resource allocation, and economic stability. In Kano State, reforms implemented between 2000 and 2020 have aimed to improve revenue generation, reduce budget deficits, and invest in social and physical infrastructure that support sustainable growth (Ibrahim, 2023). These reforms are designed to create an environment conducive to long-term development by enhancing public services, reducing inequality, and stimulating private sector investment. Empirical studies suggest that effective fiscal reforms contribute to higher economic stability and social progress when combined with transparent governance and efficient expenditure management (Oluwaseun, 2023). However, challenges such as political interference, bureaucratic inefficiencies, and misallocation of funds continue to undermine these efforts (Chinwe, 2024). This study critically evaluates the impact of fiscal policy reforms in Kano State on sustainable development, identifying key determinants and proposing strategies to optimize fiscal management for long-term growth.
Statement of the problem
Despite fiscal policy reforms intended to promote sustainable development, Kano State still experiences economic instability and social disparities. Inefficient fund allocation, bureaucratic delays, and political interference undermine reform effectiveness (Ibrahim, 2023; Chinwe, 2024). These challenges hinder the ability of fiscal policies to generate sustainable economic outcomes and improve public services. The study seeks to identify these limitations and propose measures to enhance fiscal policy’s role in driving sustainable development.
